A tight lower bound for Vertex Planarization on graphs of bounded treewidth

چکیده
In the Vertex Planarization problem one asks to delete the minimum possible number of vertices from an input graph to obtain a planar graph. The parameterized complexity of this problem, parameterized by the solution size (the number of deleted vertices) has recently attracted significant attention. The state-of-the-art algorithm of Jansen, Lokshtanov, and Saurabh [SODA 2014] runs in time 2O(k log k) · n on n-vertex graph with a solution of size k. It remains open if one can obtain a single-exponential dependency on k in the running time bound. One of the core technical contributions of the work of Jansen, Lokshtanov, and Saurabh is an algorithm that solves a weighted variant of Vertex Planarization in time 2O(w logw) ·n on graphs of treewidth w. In this short note we prove that the running time of this routine is tight under the Exponential Time Hypothesis, even in unweighted graphs and when parameterizing by treedepth. Consequently, it is unlikely that a potential single-exponential algorithm for Vertex Planarization parameterized by the solution size can be obtained by merely improving upon the aforementioned bounded treewidth subroutine.

The Effect of Planarization on Width
We study the effects of planarization (the construction of a planar diagram D from a non-planar graph G by replacing each crossing by a new vertex) on graph width parameters. We show that for treewidth, pathwidth, branchwidth, clique-width, and tree-depth there exists a family of n-vertex graphs with bounded parameter value, all of whose planarizations have parameter value Ω(n). However, for ba...
متن کاملDrawing Planar Graphs with Many Collinear Vertices
Given a planar graph G, what is the maximum number of collinear vertices in a planar straight-line drawing of G? This problem resides at the core of several graph drawing problems, including universal point subsets, untangling, and column planarity. The following results are known: Every n-vertex planar graph has a planar straight-line drawing with Ω( √ n) collinear vertices; for every n, there...
متن کاملAlgorithmic Meta-Theorems for Graphs of Bounded Vertex Cover
Possibly the most famous algorithmic meta-theorem is Courcelle’s theorem, which states that all MSO-expressible graph properties are decidable in linear time for graphs of bounded treewidth. Unfortunately, the running time’s dependence on the MSO formula describing the problem is in general a tower of exponentials of unbounded height, and there exist lower bounds proving that this cannot be imp...
متن کاملPlanarization and Acyclic Colorings of Subcubic Claw-Free Graphs
We study methods of planarizing and acyclically coloring claw-free subcubic graphs. We give a polynomial-time algorithm that, given such a graph G, produces an independent set Q of at most n/6 vertices whose removal from G leaves an induced planar subgraph P (in fact, P has treewidth at most four). We further show the stronger result that in polynomial-time a set of at most n/6 edges can be ide...
متن کاملStructurally Parameterized $d$-Scattered Set
In d-Scattered Set we are given an (edge-weighted) graph and are asked to select at least k vertices, so that the distance between any pair is at least d, thus generalizing Independent Set. We provide upper and lower bounds on the complexity of this problem with respect to various standard graph parameters. In particular, we show the following: • For any d ≥ 2, an O∗(dtw)-time algorithm, where ...
